Terra Engine Air Filter Maintenance Policy
This page explains Terra’s commercial preventative-maintenance standard for engine air filters. The policy applies across machines and brands where Terra builds service kits, unless verified OEM documentation specifies a different fixed interval for the exact application.
The cycle repeats: 1500H primary, 2000H both, 2500H primary, 3000H both, and so on. Replacement should occur earlier where restriction, contamination, water ingress, damage, sealing failure or severe dust conditions justify it.
WHAT KOMATSU SAYS
OEM guidance is not identical across every machine.
In official guidance for certain radial-seal elements, Komatsu permits cleaning only the outer element, limits the number of cleanings, and warns that the inner element should not be removed or blown with compressed air because the filter media can be damaged and allow dust into the engine.
That is Komatsu guidance. Terra’s policy below is deliberately more conservative and must not be represented as a universal Komatsu rule.
WHY TERRA DOES NOT CLEAN
We prefer replacing the element to introducing cleaning risk.
Donaldson recommends that heavy-duty air filters are not cleaned and reused. Its technical guidance identifies the risk of damage from compressed air or high-pressure water, clean-side contamination, and an approximate 20–40% reduction in dirt-holding capacity with each cleaning.
For that reason, an engine air filter supplied under a Terra service policy is not returned to service after cleaning. It is replaced with a new element.
WHY THE 1:2 RATIO
It is the conservative end of a recognised practice.
Donaldson states that most sites and applications find the best safety-to-primary change-out ratio between 1:2 and 1:4. Terra uses 1:2: the primary is replaced every 500 hours and the safety element is replaced at every second primary change, which is every 1,000 hours.
This choice is also consistent with examples of Komatsu 1,000-hour service kits that recommend both outer and inner air elements together to complete the service.
OEM OVERRIDE RULE
A verified fixed OEM interval takes precedence.
The 500H/1000H pattern is Terra’s default preventative-maintenance rule. Where the manual or OEM documentation for the exact machine, model, variant or serial number specifies a different fixed replacement interval, Terra must use that verified OEM interval.
The exact primary and secondary element identities must also be verified before a kit is published. Terra does not assume an inner filter simply because a similar machine uses one.

BEFORE ORDERING
Always confirm the machine, model, serial number and operating conditions. Terra uses verified data to build kits, but production changes, optional equipment, severe environments and OEM specifications can change the maintenance requirement.
